Students will diagram the interaction between the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere to explain how unequal heating causes sea and land breezes.

Warm-up: Sphere Scout
Distribute the Sphere Scout Warmup . Students identify the Geosphere (land), Hydrosphere (water), and Atmosphere (air). Discuss: "Which sphere is responsible for weather?"

Play the Crash Course Kids video. Use the following pause points for class discussion:

Students create a split-page poster. Use Red arrows for rising warm air (Low Pressure) and Blue arrows for sinking/rushing cool air (High Pressure).

Sea Breeze:
Cool air moving from the water to the land during the day.
Land Breeze:
Cool air moving from the land to the water during the night.
Unequal Heating:
Surfaces heating and cooling at different rates (land is faster than water).
Teacher Tip
Remind students that wind is named for where it comes from . A sea breeze comes from the sea. A land breeze comes from the land. This is a common point of confusion for 5th graders!

Your Goal
Create a two-sided scientific diagram that explains the difference between a Sea Breeze and a Land Breeze. You must show how the Geosphere (land) and Hydrosphere (water) interact with the Atmosphere (air) to move wind.
Construction Steps

The Split
Fold your 12x18 drawing paper in half "Hot Dog Style" (long ways). Label the left side Daytime Sea Breeze and the right side Nighttime Land Breeze.

The Landscape
Draw a simple coastline on both sides. Label the Geosphere (Sand/Land) and the Hydrosphere (Ocean). Add a Sun on the left and a Moon on the right.

The Air Action
Use Red Arrows to show where warm air is rising. Use Blue Arrows to show where cool air is sinking or rushing in to fill the space.

Pressure Labels
Place a Low Pressure label where the air is warm and rising. Place a High Pressure label where the air is cool and sinking.
