- Colored pencils/markers
- Cattle Catalog Photos
Lesson Procedure
5m
The Dog Comparison (Hook)
Display the slide showing a Chihuahua and a Great Dane. Ask: "Are these the same animal?" Explain that while they look different, they are both dogs. Introduce the concept of breeds: different groups of the same animal species that look unique.
5m
Cattle Quest (Video)
Watch 4 Reasons Cows are Awesome! (0:33-1:10). Pause on each breed photo mentioned (Holstein, Jersey, Devon, Khandari, Highland). Ask students to shout out one physical trait they notice for each (e.g., "fluffy!", "spots!", "humps!").
Key Vocabulary: Holstein, Jersey, Devon, Khandari, Highland.
20m
Breed Profile Cards
Distribute the Breed Collector Cards template. Students choose one breed from the video or reference photos to profile.
Step 1: The Portrait
Draw the breed accurately based on reference photos. Pay attention to colors and horns.
Step 2: The Data
Fill in the "Trait Checklist" (Color, Horns, Hair/Fur type) and add one "Cool Fact."
5m
Trading Post (Closure)
Students pair up and "trade" their cards. Each student must then describe their partner's breed to the class using at least two physical traits (e.g., "This is a Jersey cow; it is brown and has a small face.").
Discussion Anchors
Domesticated vs. Wild
"How is a cow different from an Aurochs (their ancestor)? Why did humans want to protect them?" (Answer: Food, milk, safety from predators).
Cattle Terminology
"Are all these animals 'cows'?" (Clarify: No, cows are girls, bulls/steers are boys, calves are babies. Together they are cattle).
