Objective
Students will define 'echo' and demonstrate how sound bounces off surfaces.
Duration
30 Minutes
Materials
Rubber ball, Crayons, Reflection Sheet, Presentation Slides.
1. Warm-up: Hands vs. Room (5 min)
"Everyone, cup your hands over your mouth like a little tunnel. Now, whisper 'Hello!' into your hands."
"Now, put your hands down and shout 'Hello!' to the back of the room."
Key Question: Where did the sound go when your hands were in the way? Where did it go when your hands were gone?
2. Video: How Do Bats See? (5 min)
Watch the SciShow Kids video. Focus on the segment from 0:57 to 1:11.
"Did you see the blue lines? Those were the echoes! What happened when they hit the wall?"
Definition: An echo is when sound bounces off of things and you can hear it again.
3. Main Activity: The Echo Game (15 min)
Part A: The Human Echo
- Take students to a large space (gym/cafeteria).
- Teacher is the "Sound Maker" (Shout a word like "CAVE!").
- Students are the "Wall" (Shout the same word back, but quieter).
Part B: The Ball Bounce
- Show a rubber ball. "If this ball is a sound wave, let's see what happens when it hits a wall."
- Throw the ball against the wall. Watch it bounce back.
- Explain: "Sound does exactly that! It hits the wall and bounces back to our ears."
4. Reflection & Drawing (5 min)
Hand out the "My Sound Bounce Sheet." Students draw themselves making a sound and the "echo" bouncing back from a wall.
Extension Idea: Material Testing
Try making echoes against different surfaces. Does sound bounce off a soft pillow as well as a hard wall? Bring a few pillows or blankets and try the ball bounce demo against them. Does it bounce back? No! Soft things "soak up" the sound.

Why can't we hear echoes in our classroom?
Answer: Our classrooms usually have carpets, posters, and chairs that "catch" the sound waves. Large, empty rooms like gyms have hard, flat walls that let sound bounce easily.
How do bats use echoes?
Answer: They use echolocation! They make a sound, wait for it to bounce back, and use their big ears to catch the bounce. This helps them "see" in the dark.
Is an echo exactly like the original sound?
Answer: It's usually a bit quieter and takes a tiny bit of time to get back to us because sound has to travel to the wall and back.
